The next step in the Digital Frogloggers is the use of embedded systems, miniature computers that can record the sounds to a CF card. One of these computers, from the company Gumstix, has an audio card that allows to record stereo sound (16 bit, variable sampling rate) to a flash card. Compact Flash (CF) cards are available with up to 8GB. This means that more than 3 hours of mono, CD-quality sound can be stored per GB, more than 24 hours in a 8GB card!
These systems feature an Intel XScale PXA255 processor running at 200 or 400MHz and they run Linux, so they are very flexible in their capabilities. You do not need to know Linux, I’ll program the systems and you will retrieve the recordings from the flash card.
Version 1.2 of the Mini features:
* Custom program stored in the CF card – this makes it easier to change or edit the program
* Sox – this program allows some processing to the audio file, mostly to reduce the file size
