The lecture demonstrates, by means of practical examples, the use of algorithmic relationship in the art of moving images, from films and early generative art to contemporary digital techniques. The focus is on the use of the algorithmic model as a sort of artistic game and, at the same time, a strategy leading from an intuitive mode of creation to the design of a model situation. There will be a discussion about the overlapping areas of music, literature and visual arts and also about the various roles that the algorithm assumes in the practice of art. The lecture will include the projection of films by Peter Kubelka, Kurt Kren, James Whitney, Larry Cuba, Dan Sandin and Granular Synthesis.
