Send + Receive is an international festival that advances the discipline of sound art, and is one of the few annual media arts festivals in North America focusing exclusively on sound-based work. It has become an invaluable opportunity for showcasing the innovative work of Manitoban, Canadian and international artists. Send + Receive addresses the need for a critical and intimate platform for audio and media art. With feedback from the public, collaborating arts groups, and artists, Send + Receive meets the creative and technical needs of professional artists.
For Send + Receive’s tenth anniversary this fall, we have invited several international sound artists to participate as performers and speakers, and confirmed participants thus far include Japanese sound sculptors Sawako, FourColor and Moskitoo, Virginia/Providence-based collective dearraindrop, and New York audio artist and founder of 12k Records, Taylor Deupree. We are very pleased to announce that Australian artist Oren Ambarchi will be participating as part of curator Eric Mattson’s evening entitled Breaking Walls. The evening will also include performances by Alexandre St.Onge (Montreal) and ANGEL (the duo of Dirk Dresselhaus of Schneider TM and Finnish artist Ilpo Väisänen of Pan Sonic).
Send + Receive [version 10] will also be showcasing an exciting array of outstanding performances from local and Canadian sound artists, such as Kenny Roux, Alexandre St-Onge, Fletcher Pratt and more. University of Winnipeg radio station CKUW 95.9 FM will be doing a radio series in collaboration with Send + Receive throughout the festival, with hour-long features on Canadian sound artists selected from Send + Receive’s open call. Local sound artist Blunderspublik, and visiting artists Sawako and ANGEL will also be conducting workshops as part of Send + Receive’s outreach program. In addition, the festival will host some remarkable new installations from Darsha Hewitt & Alexandre Quessy and Diane Morin.
Film screenings will take place at the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque, and confirmed screenings include a retrospective of the celebrated Australian series SUBSONICS, spread over two nights. A series of six half-hour episodes that explore the long neglected area of experimental music, SUBSONICS features over 24 international artists – including Sachiko M., Masonna, Keith Rowe and more – and covers everything from all-elephant Orchestras and the sounds of electrical activity in the upper atmosphere, to cutting edge turn-table artists and music for sticky tape. SUBSONICS uncovered a vibrant and thriving underground culture and features the many and diverse styles that make up this burgeoning musical scene. In collaboration with the Cinematheque and Platform Gallery, dearraindrop will also be presenting an evening of their short films and videos.
