Invented by Turkish designer Görkem Sen, the yaybahar is the electricity-free answer to the Theremin. It resonates a psychedelic sonic array that conjures both the future and a deep mystical past… but also that sound you get when you whack an electric fence with a stick.
It looks strange too. Undeniably large, its appearance is a cross between a TV aerial, an abstract expressionist sculpture and an enlarged dental implement; you’re unlikely to see this impractical wonder turning up in Australian lounge rooms. In fact, the closest you’re likely to get is this video. Have a listen. Headphones essential.
