As a form of collective curating, organisations were asked to suggest artists working with field recordings to contribute sounds to share something about the city and compiled online in a blog. Sounds are exchanged to share aspects of other cities, lives and cultures. Artists are invited to mix the sounds in a compilation to be released in 2011. Through collaborations with artists from Mons, a series of performances were developed to engage the local with regional and international sounds and networks.
Interviews from the organisations are part of a research process of making visible the people, ideas and practices in the field around the world. The videos presented to provide context to cultural infrastructures in the city and on the diversity of approaches and interests to sound and sound practice. Sound is an emerging practice that is broadly defined with many possibilities for production and distribution. Through an investigation into sound practice and its communities, sound becomes a tool for cultural research and exchange and a means to understand a complex and globalising cultural space.
