Seth Kim-Cohen [In The Blink of an Ear: Toward a Non-Cochlear Sonic Art]
Continuum Publishing
July 2009
«Finally, a book that dares to think critically and philosophically about sound art. Kim-Cohen shows what post-War art history would look (and sound) like if it did not exclude the sonic, and if soud art were considered within the history of Conceptualism. This is a landmark book with which any future theory of the sonic arts will need to contend.» Christoph Cox, Professor of Philosophy, Hampshire College, co-editor of Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music
«A line in the sand of the Chladni plate of sound art. Kim-Cohen is impatient with the simple ding in the thing-in-itself: the metaphysical front end of the church bell. So he pits Duchamp’s non-retinal art against Cage’s sound-in-itself and argues for a non-cochlear art where sounds are allowed to keep resonating past the inner ear all the way to the brain and back. He speaks eloquently for all who like to think and listen at the same time.» Douglas Kahn, author of Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts

NON-COCHLEAR SOUND
Organized by Seth Kim-Cohen
Diapason will be working with sound artist and author Seth Kim-Cohen to present an exhibition of «Non-Cochlear Sound», as formulated in Kim-Cohen’s book «In the Blink of an Ear: Toward a Non-Cochlear Sonic Art» (Continuum). The exhibition is scheduled for October, 2010.
CALL FOR WORK
OVERVIEW
Non-Cochlear Sound describes a form of sonic practice not primarily concerned with the ear. Marcel Duchamp’s famous call for a non-retinal visual art was answered (eventually) by minimalism, conceptual art, social-based practice, and a host of approaches that appeal not to the eye, but to other concerns. In his new book, In The Blink Of An Ear: Toward a Non-Cochlear Sonic Art, artist and theorist Seth Kim-Cohen asks why sound has been slower to make the conceptual, linguistic, and social turns. As a way of responding to this question and of “redressing” this perhaps unfortunate sonic situation, we seek sound work that engages any or all of the following: sociality, conceptualism, politics, textuality, discursivity, subjectivity, history, economics, or philosophy.
CRITERIA
Major criteria for artist participation is:
– Artists working with sound (although the work can include other materials and media as well)

Algo parecido ya se colgo hace como ocho meses. ¿no?
A history of Noise in Music (el título es bien claro, ¿no?). Pídelo a la vez y te saldrá mejor el envío. ¡Merece la pena!
