Ear to the Earth is an international network of musicians, composers, sound artists, scientists, environmental activists, and members of the public who are concerned about the environment. It’s a network that connects to an annual festival in New York, to other events throughout the world, to documentation of our sound environment, and to events and activities yet to be defined. This website is the focal point of that network.
Our idea is to engage the public in environmental issues through environmental sound and sound art. It’s a new idea. And it’s an important idea. Listening can get people involved. Listening is close and personal. And we believe that by connecting people with the sounds of the world, we can involve people in what’s happening to the world.
Mark Moffett, ecologist, prize-winning photographer for National Geographic, recipient of the prestigious Lowell Thomas Medal from the Explorers Club and Rolex, wrote to us:
«Modern ecologists may have reached a limit on how effectively they can convey messages to the public, and they may now need to draw upon the emotional vibrancy offered by the arts.»
